Learning To Think Critcally Is Hard Work

Working on improving critical thinking skills is tough but gratifying. Though I'm proud to say I do well on such tests, there's much room for improvement. For example, navigating through something called 'Faulty common sense' is tricky.

One annoying critical thinking error is the ad hominen. When you read about what exactly constitutes an ad hominen, you realize just how prevalent it is. I discovered I have engaged in it in the past, though, thankfully, on a limited basis. I certainly don't make things personal.

One way we commit an ad hominen is insisting on not treating each issue on its own. There are different tyoes of ad hominens. Source-association, for instance, is a popular one: "Don't vote for that new initiative--it was written by the insurance lobby!"
