The Dene And Inuit First Nations

Every once in a while The Commentator makes a mistake and I follow it up with a post.

I know, I know, settle down. We're all human. Enough, I plea for calm! I shall be made the stronger for it!

In error, I confused the Dene and Inuit as the same people. I was called out on it by Paul. I can't explain it but I did trace back my silly First Nations faux pas: It was the term 'Eskimo' that was changed to Inuit.

So. There.

Here's a link to how the Inuit are. And one for the Dene.

  1. Man When you eat humble pie you eat it all. By the way, Eskimo meant "eaters of raw meat" in a derogatory way which is why the Innuit resented it.
    For a nice inside look at their ways' I strongly recommend "Uqalurait, an Oral History of Nunavut, compiled and edited by John Bennett and Susan Rowley, McGill Queen's University Press, 2004". My son gave it to me last summer when he came back from Iqaluit where he gave a lecture and participated in a Committee meeting of a research project on Northern Peoples and their cultures.

  2. Thanks for that, Paul.

    I live and die by my intellectual sword. If you can't be honest with yourself then your writing has no meaning.

    It's not humble; I'm embarrassed but I face the music. To make this worse, I studied Arctic history and got an...A. I don't know how I confused them. Maybe because I was watching 'Beverley Hills Cop' while I typed it and wasn't giving it its due attention.

  3. Well watching TV and writing can do that, multitasking is always daunting. About that "A" in Arctic History, do not fret, it has changed a lot over the last 20 years.

    @Paul

    You know that, due to corpus callosus between the two halves of the brain being thicker in women, they are much better at multitasking?

    That might be why my wife is mad at me every time I tell her to talk quietly whenever I am blogging, while she can fax, write, paint the ceiling and scold her daughters (and me) all at the same time.

    Amazing.

    Yes, you ate all the humble pie, one has to admit.
