Leave Jesus Christ Out Of It

I keep hearing from those who defend the welfare state how "if we're truly Christian" the concept of looking out for one another shouldn't be debated. After all, Jesus was, apparently, a socialist.

It's an assumption by faith logic I guess. Whatever works.

Personally, I have no idea where Jesus' political leanings would lie were he alive today. Something tells me being the Son of God and all, he wouldn't care too much for politics or sports. Opera I can see. What, with all those human tragedies. It may even be comedy to him. I can just see him saying, "Stupid, humans!" and "It's funny because it's true!"

And what if did run for office? Not even the "I died for your sins" bumper sticker would impress people these days. The media, atheists and cynics would rip him to shreds for his saintly naivete.

We choose to have the state to maintain various socialist measures to take care of our weakest links. Some people like to roll with this idea. But to use Jesus as leverage strikes me as weird.

Besides, I don't think Jesus was too fond of the state. I mean, dudes, Rome crucified him.

Right?
