What The Young Are Watching

Not sure if this is a good thing.

Stewart and Colbert are funny and all...but...it's still comedy.

Then again, people will say CNN, MSNBC and Fox are comedies now.

Kids have no interest in classical education of any kind so let them further turn their minds into senseless mush. If they think Stewart and Colbert are trusted sources of interpreting news so be it.

  1. First of all, if you watch the Daily Show and/or Colbert, you'll know more about what's going on from that one hour than from sitting around on your retired ass watching Fox News all day, putting all your money into over-priced antique coins from Goldline.

Second, this is particularly sad because these shows only cover 2 news stories per episode sometimes, though usually they at least briefly provide a glib remark and funny graphic (with pun in the caption) for half a dozen.

Third, if most young people are anything like me, they're watching those shows to laugh and not wasting their time with TV news, opting for up-to-the-minute internet reporting. TV news is like facebook now: only for old, creepy people who want to stare at hot young cleavage.

Fourth... who considers stuff like "The Daily Show" news, except people who decided to include it in the study? Did they include other comedic shows that draw on the news? Do you include Letterman and Leno? They openly admitted to not counting time spent on handheld devices, which I think are popular (I wouldn't know, my cell still have a rotary dial).

I think the only people who put CNN or MSNBC on TV are airports, and I'm pretty sure they're paid to do it.

  2. Also, they should include Real Time with Bill Maher, which starts up again next Friday on HBO at 10pm.

  3. And you're gonna wait for that check. Tough times you know.

So where are kids getting their news anyway?

I think Letterman/Leno are different cats altogether. A few opening jokes about current events and then they interview. The other shows are satire and do take themselves seriously - Maher does anyway. Miller too.
