The Martin Ultimatum

I don't normally get all hot and bothered about players deciding to not play for their country provided if the reason or excuse is acceptable.

That said, Russell Martin's ultimatum to Team Canada of having him play short stop at the World Baseball Classic is weak. Dude has played over 900 games in the league mostly  (like 90% of the time) as a catcher. I don't think he's ever played SS.

So why was he asking? SS is a key position. I know Canada doesn't have depth there but the move by Canada to not call his demand was a sound one.

Brett Lawrie of the Blue Jays, for his part, is not accepting Martin's decision.

I have to agree. I know the Baseball Classic hasn't evolve into a world class tournament yet and that pro teams would rather their star players not participate, but when your country comes calling you should answer. Ryan Dempster didn't in the past and deserved the criticism.

Canada has a decent squad even without Martin, but his experience could have been valuable.

As for him being the best player, nah.

Justin Morneau and Brett Lawrie are better. Joey Votto is by far Canada's best player. As of now, it's uncertain he will play due to a knee injury. That would be a devastating blow.

Martin who played for the Yankees last season signed with the Pirates in the off season.

Will I be watching the Classic? If it's on and I'm around with some down time, I will.
