Passing Of Two Great Hockey Personalities

This week the hockey world lost two coaching giants in Pat Quinn and Victor Tikhonov.

A throwback, the engaging Quinn coached over 20 seasons and 1400 games Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Vancouver and Toronto closing off his career with a brief stint in Edmonton. While he never won the Stanley Cup (he has two finals appearances with the Flyers and Canucks in 1979 and 1994 respectively on his resume) he did coach Team Canada to its first Olympic gold since 1952 in 2002 in Salt Lake City. He's also remember for a memorable and devastating hit on Bobby Orr in the 1970s.

Tikhonov coached the 'Big Red Machine' of the Central Red Army between 1979 and 1992. The Soviet Union and its dreaded CCCP letters emblazoned across their jersey dominated international hockey since the 1960s having emerged in the late 1950s.

He was the face of Soviet hockey during my time. Among his moments was the loss to Team USA in Lake Placid in 1980 and a 1981 Canada Cup title over Team Canada. Internationally, he led the Soviets to three gold medals and a silver medal.
